Providing essential resources to support student success

Lewiston Public Schools in Maine serves more than 5,000 students, but some students face challenges such as poverty and homelessness that make it difficult to focus on school. To address these needs, the district created the Store Next Door, which provides students and their families with essential items, including hygiene products, clothing, shoes, backpacks and school supplies.
“We’re giving our students the resources to focus on their education instead of the obstacles in their way,” Superintendent Jake Langlais said. “When students feel prepared and supported, they walk into class with confidence and a sense of belonging.”
The Store Next Door supports more than 400 students identified as not having stable housing. It has also fostered partnerships with local nonprofits to expand its services.
Horace Mann agent PJ Kinney nominated Lewiston Public Schools for the Horace Mann Educators Foundation’s EmpowerED grant program, which awarded $2,500 grants to 10 nonprofit, education-related organizations nationwide.
