Celebrating Springfield's top educators

Educator of the year, Matt Maton, Social Studies Teacher at Springfield Southeast High School
May 1, 2026
Matt Maton thought something was wrong. His AP History class was taking their Presidents exam when his students unexpectedly began silently walking out of the classroom, prompting him to follow. What he thought might be a protest turned into a surprise celebration honoring him as the 2026 Springfield District 186 Horace Mann Educator of the Year.
A social studies teacher at Springfield Southeast High School, Maton is known for making meaningful connections with his students.
“I try to bring relevance to the topics,” Maton said. “In this fast-moving world, where news is almost instantaneous, I connect what we’re studying to what’s happening today.”
He added that the recognition is especially meaningful because it came from his students.
“It’s truly an honor to be nominated by students who appreciate the work you bring to class, because I sure appreciate them,” he said.
Horace Mann is proud to support and celebrate the educators who shape the future of our communities through the Springfield Educator of the Year program. This annual recognition honors teachers and administrators who demonstrate exceptional dedication, innovation and impact.
Educator of the Year finalists included: Jamie Berberet (Jefferson Middle School), Tim Elliott (Lindsay Elementary), Tandra Jett (Fairview Elementary), Caitlin McCarthy (Washington Middle School), Lydia Negele (Springfield High School), and Donna Shepherd (Iles School). Horace Mann also recognized Dr. Lisa Leardi, Principal of Springfield High School, as Administrator of the Year. Administrator of the Year finalists included Christy Ackley (District 186 Student Support Services) and Dr. Nicole Nash Moody (District 186 Assistant Superintendent).
The future of education was also on display as we recognized this year’s Rising Star educators, those with four or fewer years of teaching who are already making a meaningful impact: Nichole Aiwaz (Washington Middle School), Abbie Antonacci (Dubois Elementary), Ritch King (Matheny-Withrow Elementary), Frankie Kulavic (Springfield Southeast High School), and Nicole Pedigo (Franklin Middle School).
Together, these educators demonstrate a deep commitment to their students and play an important role in strengthening their communities. Horace Mann is proud to celebrate educators like Matt and his peers because we know that when educators are supported and recognized, it empowers them.
