The GLOW program (Girls Learning to be Outstanding Women) encourages fourth and fifth grade girls to be confident, respectful and find their own voice. The program at Cannons Elementary School in Spartanburg, South Carolina gives girls a safe place to process through issues, fears and friendships. It also builds relationships with fellow students and teacher mentors.

“GLOW has given our girls a connection with other adults and other girls that are not in their classes as well as helped them to build their confidence and see the best in themselves and in others,” Brittany Newman, math interventionist at Cannons.

A grant from the Horace Mann Educators Foundation for the GLOW program at Cannons made it possible for the girls to tour Wofford College and attend a women’s basketball game.

“Our GLOW girls enjoyed the field trip to Wofford. A lot of them had never visited a college campus before. It was a wonderful experience for them to go and watch the girls’ basketball team. The highlight was getting to eat in the dining hall with the students,” said Shannon Turner, math interventionist at Cannons.

The girls in GLOW said the program helped them learn problem solving, how to work together, make difficult choices, meet new friends and help others.

Horace Mann agent AJ Kyle nominated the school for the Horace Mann Educators Foundation’s EmpowerED grant program which awarded $2,500 grants to 10 nonprofit, education-related organizations countrywide.
