The Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools started Exchangerees to help educators shop for the school supplies their students need without having to spend their own money. Recently the Foundation restocked The Exchangerees shelves following a grant from the Horace Mann Educators Foundation.

Sir Stephens, a teacher from Milford Mill Academy, said one item he finds invaluable for his classroom are fidgets that help students focus in the classroom. Arinita Crawford, also from Milford Mill, said she stocks up on notebooks and pencils for her students.

“We hold four shopping evenings each month. On average 65 teachers shop the shelves at our Exchangerees each evening,” said Dr. Heather RC Wooldridge, associate director of the Education Foundation of BCPS. “Teachers will select classroom resources and school supplies that directly impact their students each month, benefiting a total of more than 6,760 students per month.

Horace Mann agent Christie Compeau nominated the school for the Horace Mann Educators Foundation’s EmpowerED grant program which awarded $2,500 grants to 10 nonprofit, education-related organizations nationwide. Compeau says she consistently hears from educators about how much they appreciate The Exchangerees.
