2026 Horace Mann Awards for Teaching Excellence: Investing in Education

At the 2026 Salute to Excellence in Education Gala in Washington, D.C., the Horace Mann Educators Foundation proudly celebrated five educators whose work is transforming classrooms and communities across the country.
Through our partnership with The NEA Foundation, the Horace Mann Awards for Teaching Excellence recognize teachers who demonstrate exceptional classroom skill, a deep commitment to equity, meaningful community engagement, and powerful advocacy for the profession.
Meet the 2026 Honorees:
At an alternative high school in Colorado, Janet meets students at pivotal moments, many arriving discouraged, off track or carrying heavy life challenges. She creates emotionally safe classrooms rooted in trust and accountability, helping students rediscover their gifts and believe in their futures. Damon, during the gala, received the NEA Member Benefits Award for Teaching Excellence, one of public education's top honors.
In Idaho, Melyssa brings science to life through hands-on, experiential learning. She encourages students to “get messy,” embrace curiosity, and see failure as part of discovery. Beyond her classroom, she mentors early-career teachers and advocates for public education, multiplying her impact far beyond her own students.
In Texas, JoMeka plants seeds that last a lifetime. Inspired by the teacher who once made her feel safe and seen, she ensures every child, regardless of background, feels valued from day one. She brings STEM access and community partnerships into underserved schools and works to strengthen teacher preparation and retention statewide.
A high school English teacher in Washington, Stephanie builds classrooms where students’ stories matter. By prioritizing trust and belonging, she empowers young people to process adversity and see themselves as authors of their own futures.
In South Carolina, Pete centers his classroom on wonder, reflection, and meaning. He believes students need room to try, fail, and grow, and that teachers need autonomy to create authentic learning experiences. A strong advocate for teacher voice, Pete works within his community to elevate respect for the profession.
