Celebrating Educators Who Inspire

April 10, 2025
At Horace Mann, supporting educators is at the heart of who we are—and each year, we’re honored to recognize those making an extraordinary impact in their schools and communities. That commitment was on full display at Black Hawk Elementary School in Springfield, Illinois, where cheers filled the gym as fifth grade teacher Lisa Schweska was surprised with the announcement that she is the 2025 Horace Mann–Springfield District 186 Educator of the Year. With more than 30 years in education, Schweska is known for her joyful, hands-on teaching and deep investment in student success. “I want students to remember that I listened to them, cared about them and pushed them to be their best—even when they didn’t like it,” she said. “Because I believed in them. And I always will.” Click here to watch video.
Erika Metz, Assistant Principal at Southeast High School, was named Administrator of the Year for her visible leadership and tireless advocacy for students and staff. “You fight for the underdogs,” she said. “Being present—that’s just half of it. The kids want a constant. I’m your go-to person… and it’s my job to be there.” Click here to watch video.
We also honored three Rising Stars—early-career educators who are already making a strong impact: Sierra Buske (Laketown Elementary), Kristin Cullen (Lanphier High School) and Adam Lanter (Franklin Middle School). Finalists across all categories were also celebrated for their outstanding contributions to public education.
Now in its 38th year, the Springfield Educator of the Year program is one of Horace Mann’s longest-running community partnerships. It reflects our deep and ongoing commitment to recognize, support and celebrate the educators who shape our future every day.
