April 8, 2024
2023 was an important year for Horace Mann. Despite headwinds from weather losses, inflation and stock market volatility, we remained true to our mission of helping educators and others who serve their communities achieve lifelong financial success. We also continued to align our corporate strategies to the needs of all of our stakeholders - agents, employees, communities, investors and others, as well as the customers that are central to our purpose.
In staying true to our mission, we took actions to enhance our business to solidify our ability to serve an ever-growing number of dedicated public servants who play an essential role in their communities. We are successfully expanding the reach of the solutions we offer that help them protect what they have today and prepare for a successful future.
Highlights from our 2023 efforts to support our customers included:
- Identifying more than $48 million in student loan forgiveness opportunities and finding an average of more than $250 in monthly savings on student loan payments
- Continuing to fund DonorsChoose projects to help offset the dollars that educators spend from their own pockets each year
- Updating our EducatorAdvantage® program that provides educators with special benefits and extra coverage on their auto and home insurance at no additional cost
- Living our commitment to our customers through responsible business practices and a corporate-wide focus on distinctive service
To fulfill our commitments to our customers, we align our strategies to address the needs of all of our stakeholder groups, and 2023 included some exciting progress on environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitments that are integral to our business strategy. For example:
- Increased transparency of reporting workforce demographic information with the publication of our U.S. Equal Opportunity Commission (EEO-1) Report
- Maintained the diversity of our workforce, of which 57% were female in 2023
- Published inaugural Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) report, detailing our awareness and maintenance of climate-related risks and opportunities impacting Horace Mann
- Reduced absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 55% from a 2019 base year.
- Maintained long-term executive compensation tied to achievement of ESG objectives.
Alongside our internal ESG initiatives, Horace Mann Educators Corporation and the Horace Mann Educators Foundation, an independent charitable organization formed by Horace Mann Educators Corporation, contributed almost $1 million to charitable causes in 2023, including the company’s support for classroom crowd funding organization DonorsChoose. In addition, the Foundation donated more than $450,000 to educators, employees, and our communities.
The year ahead holds many opportunities as we continue to mature in our ESG programs. We look forward to continually updating you on the progress of our efforts toward making a better future for our educators and our communities.
Sincerely,
Marita Zuraitis
President and Chief Executive Officer
